At Maury Middle School, students know they have a trusted advocate in Sara Waterman, the school counselor who believes every child deserves someone firmly in their corner. With nearly two decades in education, Sara brings experience, compassion, and a deep commitment to relationship‑building that defines the “Maury way.”

Sara began her career in education in 2006 and joined Jefferson County Schools as a school counselor in 2021. Over the years, she has worked with students ranging from kindergarten through high school in both California and Tennessee. She earned her master’s degree in education from California State University, Stanislaus, but says her most meaningful learning has come from connecting with students and families day by day. “The real learning happens through relationships,” she shares. “Listening, showing up, and supporting students where they are.”

As the school counselor at Maury Middle School, Sara’s primary focus is always students. She works closely with them on managing stress, building confidence, strengthening problem‑solving skills, and setting both academic and personal goals. Her role also extends to supporting teachers by helping identify and address challenges that may affect learning outside of the classroom. “My goal is to make sure every student feels supported, heard, and successful,” she says. “Every child should know they’re not alone.”

Sara’s inspiration for working in education is rooted in her love for children—especially those who may struggle the most. “My students inspire me daily,” she explains. “We all need someone to cheer us on and help guide us forward. Being able to make even a small difference in tough situations is a true blessing.”

When asked what she enjoys most about working at Maury Middle School, Sara doesn’t hesitate: the people. “Maury is a family,” she says. “The educators I work with are incredible professionals and even better people.” She highlights the school’s strong sense of community and teamwork, noting how staff consistently support one another, often behind the scenes. Whether partnering with special education staff or collaborating across departments, Sara sees firsthand how Maury’s culture puts students first. And, she adds with a smile, “The lake view isn’t bad either.”

Sara is especially proud of the students she serves—both their visible achievements and the quiet victories many may never see. “The unspoken successes are often the most meaningful,” she explains. One initiative close to her heart is Kindness Week, held each January. During this time, Maury Hornet Ambassadors partner with the counseling department to lead activities that promote inclusivity, kindness, and positivity throughout the school. Sara believes these intentional efforts plant seeds that grow into a culture of compassion, especially for students transitioning into middle school. Supporting new Hornets and connecting with families remains a priority for her.

Outside of school, Sara enjoys spending time with her family. She and her husband have four children ranging in age from 23 to 3, keeping life full and lively. She loves traveling, trying new foods, swimming, spending time on the lake, and exploring new places. With a lifelong love of adventure, she has visited 48 states. That sense of wanderlust—and the natural beauty of Douglas Lake—ultimately led her from California to Tennessee.

Looking ahead, Sara hopes for more opportunities to spend time in classrooms building relationships, teaching social‑emotional learning, and continuing to grow a counseling program that makes a lasting difference. Her vision reflects what she models daily at Maury Middle School: connection, care, and a commitment to helping every student thrive.
